For about 50 years science has been trying to reproduce the process that powers the sun and use it as an energy supply on earth. In eight years the international fusion reactor ITER is supposed to get operative and initiate the age of Hot Fusion – a scientific dream and a billion Euro project. Currently a conference is taking place in Washington DC, right at the doorstep of US Congress. It’s motto: “Exciting New Science and Potential Clean Energy.” But it’s not about Hot Fusion. Seit etwa 50 Jahren wird versucht, den Prozess, der in der Sonne abläuft, auf der Erde zu reproduzieren und für die Energieversorgung zu nutzen. In acht Jahren soll der internationale Forschungsreaktor ITER in Betrieb gehen und die Ära der Heißen Fusion einleiten – ein Wissenschaftstraum und Milliardenprojekt. Zurzeit findet in Washington DC, direkt vor der Haustür des US-Kongresses, eine Konferenz zur Kernfusion statt. Das Motto lautet: „Spannende neue Wissenschaft und potenzielle saubere Energie“. In 2004 the German online magazine Telepolis ran my mini series about Cold Fusion. The background was an evaluation of the state of research by the US Department of Energy. Their conclusion remained ambiguous. A home program for Cold Fusion, as the proponents had hoped for, was not established. Now the science lobbying has entered another round. Since Monday the 14th International Conference on Condensed Matter Nuclear Science is held at the doorstep of US Congress. But ground work is international and especially going strong in India. A key role is attributed to a recent demonstration of Cold Fusion at Osaka University in Japan, which some hope to be the beginning of a breakthrough. 2004 lief bei Telepolis eine sechsteilige Mini-Serie über die umstrittene Kalte Fusion. Hintergrund war eine Begutachtung des Stands der Erforschung dieser potentiellen Energiequelle durch das US-Energieministerium. Das Ergebnis blieb zweideutig. Zu der breit angelegten Forschungsförderung, die die Antragsteller sich gewünscht hatten, kam es nicht. Nun ist das Wissenschaftslobbying der Kalte-Fusion-Forscher in eine neue Runde gegangen. Seit Montag findet vor der Haustür des US-Kongresses die 14. Internationale Konferenz für Festkörperkernforschung statt. Doch auch international gibt es Bemühungen, die Forschung auszuweiten, besonders in Indien. Eine Schlüsselrolle kommt der kürzlichen Demonstration einer Kalten Fusion an der Osaka Universität in Japan zu, von der Manche sich den Anfang eines Durchbruchs erhoffen. Having been accused of research misconduct by an investigation committee of Purdue University on July 18, 2008, Rusi Taleyarkhan filed an appeal on July 28. I did this interview two hours afterwards. Passages were used in a report in Deutschlandfunk. (more…)
